Friday 1st March
We have had two extremely hot days at sea with monsoon rain yesterday. This morning we arrived in Rabaul, Papua New Guinea. The photo is the view we had first thing this morning from our cabin balcony - an active, smoking volcano! It's how you imagine a volcano should look but you don't often get to see smoke rising like this. Rabaul is actually built inside a large caldera and as you can see is surrounded by active volcanoes. The volcano in the picture is Mt Tavurvur, when it violently erupted in 1994 it buried eastern Rabaul and that part is still buried. Rabaul today is much smaller and Mt Tavurvur sends smoke and ash out very frequently. The land here is very fertile and the vegetation is very lush and green. As we walked around the small town we were greeted with smiles and hellos by all the local people. Lots stopped to chat and welcome us to PNG and were very happy to tell us about their town. A really friendly place. We were supposed to leave here just after 4pm this afternoon but our departure time has been delayed because of a medical emergency. We saw an ambulance arrive at 3.40 and the captain told us this person was being taken to an air ambulance that will take them to Darwin. The ship is delayed as the ship's doctor and nurse will wait with this patient until the air ambulance arrives. They will need to return to the ship before we can sail. At the moment that will be about 8o'clock. After dusk we have to be inside until we sail because of the mosquitoes!
