Tuesday 26th March
Overnight we have sailed to Port Kelang in Malaysia. We took a coach transfer to Kuala Lumpar which took about 90 minutes and we had just under 5 hours to explore the city. Although this seemed plenty of time it soon disappeared. We were dropped off at the Petronas Towers that you can see in the picture. They have become the symbol of the city and you can go onto the link between them to see the views but the tickets have to be bought in advance as they have to limit the numbers. We stayed firmly on the ground!
We didn't have any local currency and it was too early to change any in the shopping mall in the Towers so we decided to walk to some of the places of interest. This turned out to be a mistake as not only was it a lot longer than we expected but we were walking by very busy roads and having to cross these roads - the traffic lights didn't always help! On the way we stopped at a tourist centre with a lovely garden and fountain and got some Malaysian ringgit. We looked at the KL tower from the outside but didn't go in. Eventually we made it to Merdeka Square, it is a large grassed area which before independence was used to play cricket and rugby matches. There is a very tall flag pole that might be the tallest in the world at one end of the square. There are lots of lovely buildings in this area, my favourite is the Sultan Abdul Samad Building which has copper coloured domes and today it houses the High Courts.
After wasting so much time walking this morning we did the sensible thing and got on the underground that took us back to the Petronas Towers in about ten minutes. There is a huge shopping mall on the lower floors of the towers so we went into these to have a drink and something to eat. On one side of the mall you could go out to a beautiful garden with lots of lovely fountains - this is where I took the photo. We had a short walk in the garden but it was soon time to leave - if only we had found this earlier!
