Tuesday 5th February
We left Honolulu just before midnight yesterday and arrived at another Hawaiian island, Kauai. It is called The Garden Island because it is so green, but that of course means rain! The weather today has changed from warm sunshine to heavy rain and back again frequently. The mountain area in the middle of the island is apparently the wettest place on Earth!! It is a beautiful island and has been the setting for many films. We went on the Movie and Waterfall Tour which was a lot of fun. Every place we saw we were shown film clips of them on the minibus. We saw the Wailua Falls (in the picture - it features in Fantasy Island - an old TV programme). We went to several lovely beaches including the one in South Pacific. We also went to the Coco Palms Hotel. This hotel was the setting for Elvis Presley's film Blue Hawaii. The hotel is now a ruin and has been closed since a hurricane 20 years ago. We had to sign a disclaimer before we were allowed in. It was once a very luxurious hotel and it was very interesting to see it. Even as a ruin you could see it had been beautiful. The grounds are full of coconut trees - we couldn't go into the coconut grove because it might be unsafe - but it looked lovely. Before we got to the hotel we saw a clip of a B movie that showed a Movie Tour visiting the ruins of Coco Palms Hotel being eaten by Dinocroc!! Fortunately we didn't see Dinocroc on our visit.
Just after leaving Kauai, the captain has told us that we have a problem with the bearing on the ship' propeller shaft. It is quite safe to continue but we can't go as fast as we need to. This means that our ports are being changed - so we can't stop at Bora Bora - this is to make sure we can get to Tahiti. When we get to Auckland we are now staying 2 days so the problem can be fixed (we hope!) but it means we will miss out on Napier and Wellington. We will be stopping at The Bay of Islands in New Zealand instead.
