New Year, New Oreans!
So 2010 is finally in the books and I (Ang) am delighted about it! Not because 2010 was a bad year, on the contrary it was a very good one with lots of adventures and good-times! But since 11 is my favourite and most luckiest of numbers (along with 31) I've got a really good feeling about 2011 :)
We are going to be honest from the start here, we like a good party but sometimes after a 9 hour early morning flight (thats also been delayed) you get kinda tired, so we decided to celebrate New Year Scottish time ie still 6pm here! We did this with Margaritas and Pina Coladas before heading to the French Quarter where we ate Shrimp (like a mountain of it) at the original Bubba Gumps which was splendid, not only the food but because they show the movie continuously on a loop!
Upside..New Orleans was as cool as any American City I've visited - it didn't disappoint. As Kt said upon arrival its got a distinctly Glasgow feel to it mostly due to old industrial looking buildings and the great big river.
The French Quarter was full of character with bars and eateries playing Cajun music and serving bourbon and cocktails by the shedload! They even do Christmas well offering canopies of fairy lights and real snowfall on the hour - given the weather we've had this last few weeks in Scotland we gave the latter a miss :)
Major downside for us was the weather, which was mainly heavy & persistent rain along with pretty strong winds. The only thing that distinguished it from home was the 23 degrees on the thermometer! This did restrict our movements alot and according to locals also led to a significantly smaller than expected crowd coming out for the celebrations! We were home and asleep well in advance of midnight which we admit will disgust some of our closest friends!
All in all we had a great night in the Big Easy and would jump at the chance to come back for longer! A word of warning though, those Cajun spiced foods are a taste sensation at the time but the next day they make a certain Johnny Cash number spring to mind..I'll say no more than that !
