We have now finished our cane structure that will support all the lovely plants as they grow, underneath it are pumpkins, courgettes, cuecumbers, aubergines, tomatoes, lettuce, chillies, onions, basil and some plants that I don't recognise that climbs over the canes - I think they eat the leaves. At meal times Laura is always popping into the garden to pick herbs and produce that end up on our plate in some form or another.
Last night we were invited to a barbecue by Giovanni, a neighbour. It was a typical Sicilian affair where everybody seems to do nothing for ages with lots of "discussion" by the men about the best way to light the barbecue. An hour or two later the barbecue is ready and people arrive bringing more food and drink. The barbecue was on a large veranda with the requisite enormous table for everyone to sit around and "discuss" events of the day. As the wind got up we were smoked out and our eyes were streaming with the smoke from the barbecue, no charcoal here, real men use wood. When it got dark candlebras were brought out to light the table which created a great atmosphere. Lovely grilled meat eventually arrived, particularly good were the "pizza" flavoured sausages that had cheese in them (yum yum). Combined with lots of wine we had a very enjoyable evening that ended with us strolling back under a clear night sky with a full moon lighting our path. Definitely a taste of Sicily.
