Finally managed to get the photos from the last 2/3 weeks uploaded to the blog after some technical difficulties! Since the last post we've made our way up from Sukhothai to Chiang Mai where we embarked on a 3 day trek to stay with the 'hilltribes'. The trekking was great fun, through the jungle to waterfalls, with the very comical guide occaisonally stopping to pick up a huge angry spider or feed us tree bark. The hilltribe on the other hand was in reality an old guy that sold flutes but mostly enjoyed pinching trekkers cigarettes and vodka (you can see him in the photos being cradled)...it ended with a elephant trek where you feed them bananas as you go along, ours was particularly hungry and kep blowing air and mud in our faces.
We've been staying in a bamboo bungalow in the hippy village of Pai in the Northwest for almost a week now, its been nice to stay in one place for more than 2 days, there are lots of expats here and you can see why people visit and never manage to leave! Been zipping around on a scooter to more waterfalls, hot springs and canyons and got a back cracking Thai massage...but mostly we've been eating and drinking all day! There's great markets everywhere - favourites so far are bags of Lychees, Spring rolls and hot sauce, ridiculously cheap DimSum, Deep Frid squid, Flattened chicken on a stick and shakes! (fresh fruit blended with ice) We've not been brave enough to try the fried crickets, bees and grubs yet! :s Big bottles of Chang beer for a quid and the local rum 'Sangsom' have been the tipples of choice!
The plan now is to head back to Chiang Mai for a cookery course then onto Chiang Rai and Chien Khong before crossing the border into Laos!
Will update again soon, with videos next time hopefully! check out the photos for now,
