Adventures of a Global Wanderer
so i can not buy any clothes here, everything is the size of a 15 year old. all the men are 5'7 so no clothes or shoes in my size. heat is not so bad if you figure out your timings and dress coolly.
also they have water dispensers in every building where you can fill your water bottle for free
classes are a bit too much, from 9am to 530pm only with a break for lunch
after dinner we have korean language classes from 7 to 8, then korean movies from 8-10 which i've been skipping coz the day is just too long
they are stuffing us with way too much food, then between classes they are handing out more snacks. i dont know if i am gaining weight from the food or losing it thru sweat?
so today we went to the hanok village in the town centre. this is the preserved historic quarter
first we had to decorate a paper fan, my artwork sucks and i'm supposed to be doing crafts like this with kids. after, we saw a shrine where the have the portraits of the kings. they were actually made of fabric. lunch was bibimbap which is a big bowl full of assorted vegetables and spices, then you add layers of meat and other items.
after lunch there was a street performance by local dances. i thought this old grandmother decided to join in but she was actually part of the act. here is a youtube video i made
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_pLJ2xU4 f8A
then we drove to some park setting where they have a temple. the walk to the park passed by a stream where many locals and their children were wading in the stream, just lounging or having a picnic. the heat was way too much. during classes we can get by as we are indoors but this was the first full day outdoors at midday heat. people literally looked like they had just had a shower, their hair and shirts were soaked from the sweat. i'm going to leave the country every august if possible, this type of heat is just too much. just now i went for a walk after 8pm and it was quite nice but from noon-3pm you have to stay indoors.
next two days is full schedule of classes again. the third day we do our group presentations, then find out in the afternoon about our school placements. the fourth day we are bussed to our town, i my case daegu. there are 130 people placed in daegu so it will be a few buses. i'm told we will not have internet access for upto a month. stupid rule that to get anything you need your alien registration card which can take three weeks. so no phone/tv/cable hookup without your ARC, how ridiculous. alternately, the school could hook it up in their name, or there are internet cafes everywhere. internet is super fast. i tried uploading some clips to youtube and what would have taken rogers 20 mins was done in less that two!!!
