Adventures of a Global Wanderer
My ferry to Japan was 8am Saturday morning which needed me to be at the ferry terminal 7am one hour earlier. I was figuring out somewhere close and cheap to stay on my arrival. I asked around and people didnt really have any clear suggestions other than going further from Busan Station which is a bit of a 'red light district' after hours. I decided to try looking up jimjilbangs (sleeping halls) on korean websites as usually they dont show up in english searches. The nicest one I was able to find was called Songdo Haesoopia but about a 30 min walk from the station and ferry terminal. After getting some teachers to help me look at the search results we agreed this was the best option. Also it looked very safe, family friendly, and clean despite its distance. I decided to see if I could find anything closer when I got to busan or to go here if I cant. Friday night it was busy taking the train as this was the start of the peak holiday season rush for the five day break. At Busan station I decided to walk to the passenger ferry terminal first so that I knew where it was and to see if there was any cheap accomodations nearby. There were lots of motels but these usually cost about 35,000+ ($30). I needed to get dinner and headed to the Lotte Dept store which was halfway to the sauna I was recommended to stay at. I have coupons for Lotte I'm trying to get rid off so had a free meal for dinner. I then decided to carry walking towards the sauna at Songdo beach. You can walk underground in Busan for three subway stops from Jugang to Nampo and finally Jagalchi. This way I could avoid all the lights and get there quicker. Jagalchi is the famous fish harbour and market so it was mostly closed up at night. The walk down from Jagalchi station toward Songdo Beach is a fairly industrial area as the side facing the port are large shipping yards. The walk took about 20 mins but I reached the sauna just before the Songdo bridge. It was a brightly lit high rise building with a long entrance stairway. Inside was a large reception where they spoke english. Entrance fee was 10,000w ($9) and after removing shoes you take a gender seperated elevator to the change room and bathing floors. I wasnt sure how busy this would be for the holiday period as people are supposed to go home to visit their families. Surprisingly it was quite busy with lots of kids running around. It was strange having them in the changing rooms next to me, and when I went to the naked bathing area lots of young boys were running around and diving into the pools like at the swimming pool. The nice thing I like about these saunas is you can use the scrubbing cloth to lather up and give yourself a good smooth down. You can buy these cloths in stores but its not the same for some reason. I explored the various saunas but wanted to get to bed early to grab a good spot and be rested for my early morning start. The sleeping floor was co-ed with seperated gender sleeping rooms. Families or couples could sleep in the large sleeping hall. Usually they have no windows but this had a glass wall panorama of the Songdo Bridge lit up at night and the ocean. I'm sure its scenic but would wake people up at first sunrise. I tried going into the movie room first as this was the most darkened room. There are no chairs just the floor for people to lie down, watch the movie, or sleep. No movie was playing so it was quiet. There was only one person in there but unfortunately he was snoring very loud. They did have individual alcoves in the main sleeping hall but they had all been taken and it would still be noisy with people talking and kids playing. I tried the mens sleeping room which was a bit quieter with its own door. I found an spot in the corner and lied down on my mat. After about ten minutes I had to move to the other side as a guy who was out cold started to roll over onto my mat. This happened again early morning as another person started rolling onto me waking me up. It was now time to leave anyway so I went to the shower floor. I noticed there were some foreigners whom I hadnt noticed the night before. Some were speaking Russian so may be sailors from the dock. As it was at least a 40 min walk back to the ferry terminal I jumped into a cab who got me there in minutes for only 3600w ($3.25). By jimjilbang standards this was one of the nicer ones and a good place to stay downtown or next time I'm taking the ferry. The website lists the various buses that come here but I'm not sure which direction from. http://www.songdohaesoopia.com/
