Adventures of a Global Wanderer
After leaving the Don Jail I was next heading to the OMNI tv studios for the Doors Open Toronto event today. Last year the lines were very bad and same today. I made an unscheduled stop at the National Club nearby instead.
The National Club is one of the country's oldest private members club. Nestled in the financial district by King and Bay its current members include four Canadian Prime Ministers and prominent political and business leaders.
It has its own private wine cellar dating back decades (though not part of the tour) and the building is spread over five floors. Anyone can visit if invited by a member and the member is charged back for your tab.
To become a member you also need a current member to sponsor you though they wouldnt say what membership fees are. Once you become a member you can access their global network of private clubs.
An interesting room was the Red Room so named as members of the Liberal Party whose colour is red meet in this room.
There are also guest hotel rooms for only $130 for members. They were not open today as there were guests staying. Past guest have included Princess Anne and Prince Andrew.
Due to its age it still has a dumb waiter system to bring dishes from the kitchens down below. Finally there was a newly opened roof terrace for people to smoke or look down onto Bay Street.
It was a surprising and interesting historic building hidden in the downtown core worth a visit on their next open house. It is busy from breakfast to dinner time and harkens back to the age of Empire.
