Well, after sitting around for four days in a town with only 300 residents (not exactly activity central) I've finally done it!
After SEVEN cancellations, at 10:00 this morning, I did the heli-hike up Franz Josef Glacier - my one main wish out of my whole trip - and it was soooooo worth it!
The helicopter flight was a bit nerve racking and when the pilot asked if I was ok, I stupidly answered that I was pooping myself! So what did he do? Yep, turned the helicopter and scooped down and then back up again! I could hear the other guys behind me laughing at me screaming and calling the pilot a ba@"ard!!
We landed about 600 metres above sea level and then climbed higher up in a loop and back down to the landing pad - well I say landing pad, it was just a piece of ice that had been flattened off and a few rocks put down in a circle!
The ice has formed in waves down the hill and you can see how far it has receeded. They think it has receeded over 1/2 km in just the past two months!
It was amazing climbing up and down the waves then through the ice tunnels. The ice gets bluer in places as it gets deeper and in some parts was so shiny and smooth!
This was definitely worth hanging around in Franz Josef and changing my plans for! Another tick in the box :)
