We left Ko Lanta for Rai Lay Beach in Krabi which is famous for it's 'large rock formations and crescent-shaped coves in the emerald sea, a mecca for rock climbers who congregate in these parts to tackle some of the worlds most picturesque climbs' so there you go, Conrad you'd love it!
We travelled to Krabi by mini bus getting dropped off at the pier so we could catch a longtail boat to Rai Lay. Before we had even managed to get out of the minibus we were pounced on by a larger than life lady from the pier tourist office who wanted to sort out our accommodation, onward journey etc - within 15 minutes we'd sorted out accommodation in Rai Lay, accommodation in Ao Nang and our bus and boat tickets to Koh Pha-ngan and we were on our way.
Tourism is seriously down in Thailand and the guy on the long tail boat made it quite clear that he would not leave until he had at least 5 people. Fortunately we only had to wait about 20 minutes before there was enough people for him to go (but some of them had been waiting 1h 30m!!). The boat dropped us off on the east beach (not the nicest beach) where our resort, Viewpoint Resort, was located. As is becoming quite the norm to us, we had to walk through an unsecured building site to get to our resort.
Rai Lay is only a small resort - you can walk from the East to the West Bay within 5 mins max! There are 3 beaches at Rai Lay, the west beach which is muddy, Phra Nang which is idyllic and has a lagoon and Rai Lay East which is really beautiful and has some posh resorts on it.
We hired a kayake from Rai Lay East on the second day to go and investigate some of the rock formations that can be found in the sea and to go to Ton Sai beach which is where all the rock climbers go.
After two days here it was time to move on so we headed to the East beach to jump on a long tail boat bound for Ao Nang. Arriving on Ao Nang beach I have to say we were pleasantly suprised after the impression the lady in the tourist office in Krabi had given us. In fact Ao Nang was the first place that we heard proper jolly christmas songs playing - we were in a bar relaxing in our swimwear overlooking the beach - very surreal!!
