Words... I'm supposed to use words to capture this experience on Kuna Yala. That's a toughy.
In a coconut-shell: 'Like breathing for the first time...'
Ok, nuff romanticism. Suffice it to say I might have just saved the best for last, exploration-wise. San Blas rivals Roatan island for trip experiences but remains enough out of reach to maintain my proclaimed status as hidden gold pot at the end of the rainbow. Wait, still romanticising. Blas! It's no use fighting that one.
"...best trip available [in Central America] for experiencing paradise at the mere price of a family ticket to a theme park. Don't pass this over. Natural untouched desert islands, clear waters supporting incredible marine life, native Kuna bringing you gifts then sharing their time with you, clean sea air, 360 degree skies, gloating sunrises. Time slowing down, forging friendships, four days of freedom... Ah! The [perfect moment] was laying with the coconuts on the sand gazing up at the milky way through the gaps in the palm leaves listening to the breaks on the shore 10ft from your head. Bliss...
- feedback from our Captains' online friends group. Sums it up.
Could so easily have written pages on San Blas. Hang on. I am! Or at least I've agreed to co-write a piece with a fellow trip pal I ran into on the Darien Gapster (the fast boat we took for 3 days meandering around Kuna Yala). I'm thinking to just pen the experience, put it out there, if the response is positive, develop it for publications targeted for distribution or even sale by the Kuna's tourism function - I assume some person somewhere promotes San Blas in conjunction with the Kuna since I didn't stumble upon these islands by chance. Just an idea but I'm going with it to see where it leads. We assume too much that goals worth setting, usually the elaborate ones, are doomed by probability to failure. How often do we actually put it to the test? Since I've no job presently, is there a better way to spend my time than to try a little experiment on dreams and giving a little chase?
Just when you thought things on San Blas couldn't get any better, a totally alien looking iridescent creature would land on your hand, or 2 dolphins would cross the bow of the boat, or a thick belt of rainbow appear over the horizon... I swear I'm not making this up.
Camping in San Blas, just had everything for the senses. Sleeping outdoors, cooking food on a camp fire, swimming, climbing palm trees, no shoes for 3 days, no toilets, no showers, just whatever you could make happen with sun, rain, sea, sand, sky, fire, rum, companions, natives, a cd player, a guitar and a little imagination.
I think that's all I want to say.
Thanks for checking in for my last 'in the field' blog, I will carry on loading donated photos from travel pals to try and fill the big blanks having lost my own pics since Honduras over half the trip ago! Seems as good a place as any to continue chucking my memories in prose into, after I'm back and before this whole thing gets converted into a printed journal.
Feel free to carry on commenting though and most especially, go away and dream about an adventure you've always wanted. Then do it.
TTFN,
