After finally finishing my project in Pisco, wich was delayed time after time because of my scorpion-foot, I took of with two other volunteers, Rachel and Julia, to Nazca. Our mission in Nazca was to see the mystical Nazca lines, preferibly from airplane. The Nazca lines are huge figures drawed in to the desert floor with such precision and amazing symmetri that speculations has been flying everywhere after they were discovered in the 1930´s.. Theories span from that they were runways of an ancient airfield that was used by extraterrestrials to theories like that the Nazca-people made them with ancient hot-air balloons and used them as water - trenches. However they were made, its pretty damned impressive. The biggest figures are over 300m long and are shaped with perfect symmetri, and everything is just dug out in a desert floor.
Finding tours in Nazca was, as expected, not very challenging. We checked out a couple of agencies, and eventually found out that everybody offers the same trip for the same price; and that´s a stiffy.. unfortunately the prices has skyrocketed the last couple of months. After countless planecrashes over the nazca lines, latest one in oct. 2010, the government finally tightened up security and shut down about 75% off all the tour agencies. This, off course, made it safer and more expensive.
It was an amazing sight, and the planeride itself was almost as fun as watching the lines! Tricking around in a tiny Cesna airplane over a scenery like that is definately an unique experience..
After doing the plane-ride we booked a day tour including sandboarding, crazy driving around in the Nazca - dessert and three different ruins dated back to the Nazca people, 200-700 AD. Even thoug Julia left us to go to Cusco, we ended up having an amazing time on the dunes. Sandboarding is every bit as fun as it looks. Not to mention riding around in a real beach-buggie! Sightseeing at Nazca-ruins was also a very nice experience. Not only the Incas knew how to construct in Peru..
A short, but great getaway to Nazca left us with three big highlights: Nazca - lines, Sanboarding and actually experiencing rain in one of the driest places on earth, the Nazca - dessert. Good fun in the dessert, of to the mountains; Arequipa!
