We said goodbye and thank you to Abby and Jesus in the morning. We were so grateful of how welcome they made us feel and how generous they were. With me back on the crutches and James carrying both of our bags we slowly made our way on the bus and train to Queen Street bus terminal and luckily straight onto a cheap bus that took us out of Singapore to Johor Bahru, Larkin bus terminal. We had to go through border control leaving Singapore then again over the bridge into Malaysia. It was a bit of a rush/hobble to make sure that the bus didn't leave without us but we were ok luckily! We were greeted by a guy in Larkin who was kind enough to show us to the ATM then to where we could book the next bus. We had a couple of hours to wait for the bus to Mersing but we were kept entertained by a lovely Malaysian lady who actually lives in Germany but was visiting family. She was really friendly and full of stories! She walked us down to our bus stop at 2pm. We said goodbye and got on the bus! For the equivalent of £4 for a 3 hour journey the bus was luxury! The seats were massive and so comfy. But once we started going we realised the catch! The driver was constantly on his phone and texting (swerving into the middle of the road with lack of concentration), he overtook vehicles at the craziest times - on the bridge of a hill or just before a corner. To top it all off the front suspension was completely shot so we were bouncing up and down the whole way. It was hilarious! Kind of like a roller-coaster ride! The landscape was amazing and we saw lots of banana and palm oil plantations with monkeys on the side of the road! We arrived in Mersing in one piece and got a taxi to a hotel. It was very basic but clean and cheap! We had a little rest and went out for dinner at a little Indian place. Mersing is a quiet town which makes most of its money through tourists like us using the place as a stop-over before getting the ferry to Tioman Idland. On our way back to the hotel we saw hundreds of swallows all swarming the sky above the road and sitting on the electric cables! It was amazing watching them in the night sky. All in all is was a good introduction to Malaysia. The people were so friendly and welcoming!
