after an ample Icelandic buffet breakfast at the former seafarers' lodge-unchanged since 1890 we drove to the remote Modrudalur Farm that has been in the same family for generations. It boasts it's own family church as well as sheep and a restaurant. Next. We drove on to Dettifoss, reportedly the most powerful waterfall in Europe. It was an impressive hike to the falls and were rewarded by a wonderful intense rainbow as well as the roaring falls themselves.
Next we stopped at an expanse of hot springs called Hverarondor Hverir. As soon as we started walking there was a strong aroma of sulfur in the air. First saw a pool of black bubbles, then hot mists coming up from beneath the ground.
A highlight of the day was a soak in the Myvatn nature baths. The water was a beautiful blue. With the high winds the trip from the locker room to the pool and back was quite chilly but the water varied from comfortably warm to downright hot.
Our day ended at the new Hotel Laxa where the evening entertainment consisted of viewing the Northern Lights.
