And so began our Thai island hopping adventure. First up was Koh Tao on the east of the southern Thai peninsula. This was an island we loved so much that we ended up staying for 8 nights instead of the intended 4. Koh Tao is well known for its scuba diving and so we planned to do our PADI diving qualification whilst here. We arrived on the island early morning and by 5pm had booked onto and started the theory section of the course. Over the next 3 days we learnt how to dive, starting off in a swimming pool and eventually diving to 18 metres in the ocean. What an experience! We hope we can now continue to dive at other sites.
Sairee beach is where we stayed whilst on Koh Tao and after diving we spent the remaining days enjoying the perfect beach with bright blue seas and amazing sunsets. We also took a long tail boat out to a smaller island off Koh Tao called Nangyuan Island, which is a stunning stretch of sand with ocean on either side and 2 large hills at the north and south of the beach. We climbed up one of the hills to take in the view of the beach from above - spectacular. Afterwards we went snorkelling off the beach and enjoyed the huge amounts of different types of fish that are gathered here.
On our final night in Koh Tao we stayed up until 1.45am to watch England get eliminated from the euros by Italy, we crawled to bed at around 5am.
After Koh Tao we stayed on the eastern coast moving to Koh Phangan via ferry, which took an hour and a half; thankfully the sea was quite calm. Koh Phangan is known for its full moon beach parties, however our timing was a little out and so the island was very quiet. This meant we got a good deal on a little bungalow with air con and a swimming pool. We spent two days here relaxing on the beach on Hat Rin peninsula, where most usually spend their time partying. The beach here is set in a gorgeous green bay, it's quite small though so we could imagine how rammed it must get at full moon.
Having thoroughly enjoyed 2 spectacular islands on the east coast and not wanting to leave the sun and sand just yet, we planned to move on to the islands on the west coast. We got a ferry back to the mainland and then took a bus west heading for Krabi and its nearby beaches.
