After the relative madness of Phnom Penh, the beautiful and relaxing coastal town of Sihanoukville was bliss. We had a cracking hostel 100m from the beach. Along the upper edge of the beach was a string of cafes and bars, many of which spilt their comfy wicker chairs and tables onto the beach for sunset barbecues. A near perfect spot. Many children patrolled the bars trying to braid hair and sell bracelets to tourists. Very cute and very clever kids. Also, many ladies offering nail treatment and others selling delicious crayfish. The price of drinks was cheapest we've found in Asia.
The following day, we booked a snorkeling trip to the nearby islands and set off at 8 am. Mum was pretty nervous about leaping off the side of a boat, but she overcame her fear and loved the shoals of bright tropical fish which snaffled bread from around us. We incorporated a night's stay on Bamboo Island. It is perhaps the most beautiful beach we have visited anywhere. To get to the beach huts we had to walk through the jungle for 15 minutes, but were then presented with a quiet, palm tree- fringed beach. Absolutely stunning. Unfortunately, the huts were full so Gen and I had to share a single bed, but it was worth it! The following day we headed back to the mainland, wishing we'd had more time here.
After a bus trip to the Thai border (and me stressing Gen and mum out by temporarily losing the tickets during the sweatiest part of the day, we got a bus back to Bangkok. We found out that the tourist bus which did the same journey a couple of days later to the Thai border, had rolled due to a drunk driver and a Russian girl had died. They were crazy roads!
