Another stock photo...real photos to follow soon.
It's the end of a very long first day outside of North America. I left the Calgary airport at 2 pm on Wednesday, October 5 and it is now... I am not really sure.
It was a long day but I am only in Genoa for the one night so I wanted to make the most of it and I did my best.
I have always had a vision of what an Italian city on the sea would be...and Genoa did not disappoint. To start, I can't imagine a better view of the city and port than the one from my hostel room. The hostel is on top of the mountain and the only way to get to it is bus...these buses go all the way up the mountain on roads so tight, I would be hesitant to drive my SUV on them. I only got on the wrong bus once and decided to take a tour of the city since I had a 24 hour bus pass anyway.
I walked around the city center for 7 hours and was blown away every time I turned a corner. Every building is hundreds of years old, opera singers in the markets, a geletaria on every corner and restaurants giving off smells that make your mouth water. I ended up having two dinners because there were two places that really caught my eye.
The streets are barely wide enough for vehicles to drive down but that doesn't stop Cafes and Bars from putting small patios outside, you just have to watch for cars. I actually was honked at as I sat and ate my perfect Margherita pizza (I do have a picture of this).
I am dead tired and will turn in early (Italy time not my body clocks time). I am hoping to get up early and go to the aquarium and maybe take a boat ride up the coast. I catch a train to Cannes...sometime tomorrow.
If I have one takeaway from the day; it is that I have confirmed my notion that I have no interest in seeing 10 cities in 10 days. Looking forward to 4 nights in Cannes and a slow trek to Barcelona.
