This morning Laura and I woke up at 7am (which for us felt like 6am because of the time difference between Byron and Surfers). We quickly had breakfast, then headed down the beach to start our kayak adventure.
We shared a 2 person ocean kayak. The guide told Laura to go in the front because she was smaller. When we got ready and were on the beach waiting to go, he explained that the easiest time to flip the boat was when heading out from the beach, through the waves and into the bay. This rather worried Laura...
When it was our turn to go, the guide pulled our boat in, told Laura to jump in the front seat, while I pushed for a bit then jumped in. Within seconds laura was completely soaked by a wave as we paddled our hardest to keep straight to avoid flipping over. We made it no problem. But it was so funny because Laura is a classic "one toe at a time" enterer into the ocean... So the look of shock and panic as she had to go in so fast was hilarious!
We paddled with the group through the bay, around the "pass" and into Watego's beach. I have to say that I was thoroughly impressed with Laura's paddling, as she didn't really ever stop. I was secretly expecting that I would be doing a lot of solo paddling this morning.
The tour "guaranteed" that we would see dolphins. Unfortunately we did not... But we saw a stingray and a leopard shark!
Another highlight, was when Laura and I were forced to split into separate boats. It was when we stopped to go snorkeling, and only one person was meant to get out of the kayak at a time... So we let the 2 girls next to us go at the same time. Anyways... All of a sudden laura started floating away with the current and couldn't seem to get turned around to get back to the group. She was far enough away that I couldn't see her... But I am SURE there were some panicked screams. Thankfully she managed to get it turned around and paddled hard back to the group.
We ended the morning by riding a wave (successfully) without tipping, back into the beach. When you get to the top of the wave, the boat starts to point downhill... Which means laura got soaked again! But we rode the way all the way in, managing to stay straight enough not to tip.
All in all a great day!
Back in Surfers now... And laura is finally dry!
