Loyal Readers,
My final day in Hong Kong was incredible. It is an unbelievable city and certainly my favourite that I have ever been to. I also may have set the record for most tourist things done in 1 day! Here is what I did yesterday:
1)Tram up to the Hong Kong Peak
2)Walk through Hong Kong Park
3)Try to meet Mike at the HSBC building
4)Go up the Bank of China (??) tower to the viewing deck
5)Go to Kowloon for lunch at a Chinese restaurant.
6)Walk through the Mong Kok Ladies Market
7)Walk from the market to the Tsim Sha Tsui pier
8)Walk through the walk of fame by the harbour
9)Take subway to the tailor for the second fitting of my suits
10)Buy a passport holder
11)Subway back to Central Station
12)Take the $2 Star Ferry across the harbor in time for the crazy HK skyline light show
13)Subway back to hotel to shower and do internet check in
14)Take taxi to the horse races
15)Walk through Times Square to find food
16)Get on Ferry to go to Macau
17)All nighter in Macau and returned home in time to pack and make my 145 flight to Singapore.
OK well 16 and 17 didn't actually happen but it was seriously considered after a couple beers at the racetrack!
Highlights of the days activities:
HK peak was unbelievable. It was pretty clear so I had an amazing view of the city and of Kowloon. What is amazing to me is that there is actually a lot of space on HK, in Lantau and in the New Territories, but everyone would just rather cram into tiny apartments in order to be in HK.
Hong Kong Park was not your typical Cedarvale or Caulfield Park. I walked in expecting some grass and a nice walk on the way to meet Mike at the HSBC building. What I found was an enormous park with tons of different things - First I walked through a huge enclosed aviary with hundreds of different birds, then past Tai Chi Garden, then past some sort of Olympics monument, then passed a few man made lakes and rivers. The coolest part is that it is right in the middle of the city and is so peaceful, but you can see these huge buildings right next to you.
I had a map with me and I was trying to find HSBC building to meet Mike. I messaged him to tell him I was going to be late, because it was already 1:30 and I still needed to walk out to the main road to take a tram. As I was about to get on the tram, Mike yells and says hello. I asked him what he was doing here, to which he replied that this was where we were meeting. Turns out I was heading to the wrong building and just luckily I happened to walk through where we were supposed to meet!
The Mong Kok Ladies market was quite incredible. There wasn't really anything original there - everyone seems to be selling the same knock off bags, shirts and jewellery. But it was amazing to see how much stuff and people they could cram into one little street. Mike speaks Mandarin fluently - which saved me a lot of money!
At the walk of fame at Tsim Sha Tsui there is a statue of Bruce Lee doing a fighting pose. Highlight of my day was watching all the tourists try to impersonate the pose - Great set of pictures.
The light show of HK from Tsim Sha Tsui was incredible. I really didn't know what to expect, but was blown away with the amount of lights and effort that they put into it.
Sadly my trip is finally over. I have to wait 5 whole days until my next one with Laura begins!
Looking forward to going back to Melbourne - After India and Thailand, suddently Antony and Daniel's driving isn't so scary.
