After a very lengthy journey back to Thailand we were ecstatic upon our early morning arrival back home in Bangkok. We spent the day in and out of sleep with the only thing stirring us being the monster order of McDonalds we had delivered. With us needing to be at the airport for 4am to catch our flight to the full moon party we did the sensible thing and headed out that night to meet some previous acquaintances and indulge in a tower or two or three in beer. The end result was of course a very intoxicated mad dash for the airport with not a minute of sleep. By nothing short of a miracle we boarded our flight to Koh Samui and within literally about 30 seconds of sitting down in my seat, I passed out … So much for a night of detox.
The boat journey was equally unpleasant as we transferred to the full moon party island Koh Phangan. As we will be returning here in a month's time in what promises to be an even bigger spectacle, I will only summarise this week's activities. Still destroyed after our night in Bangkok we ended up sleeping through our entire first night on the island and waking up very confused the next morning. Now very refreshed, we were ready to be on top form over the next five days which unfortunately was somewhat of an unpleasant experience for one member of the tour, with Hyams falling victim to what could only possibly be food poisoning, given the symptoms, putting him out of action for a large portion of the trip. The brave man did make the full moon party night of course, which was kick started by Chelsea's triumphant win over the scouse in the FA Cup, much to Hyams' dismay. Setting the tone for the evening it was a night, and morning as the party finished at 10am, of euphoria as 20,000 people crowded the beach, sinking through bucket after bucket of whiskey and vodka with many attempting the jump rope, covered in petrol and set alight, with fire being a common theme at the island. During the days we were surprisingly lively, the excuse for me being the big dirt motorbike I hired out to cruise around the island on. We met up with some old friends from home and toured the island with them, which we discovered actually offered a lot more than just the full moon party. One afternoon was spent bossing a couple of jet skis which I am always partial too, setting up probably the best day we had there and the most productive. That was the week very briefly summarised and there will be more to report on the island in a month's time so for now that was a teaser. We head forward now after a night stopover in Koh Samui which wasn't tame in itself as we located ourselves in what can only be seen as the red light district of the island. Phuket is our next destination, the far southwestern corner of Thailand, a fair trip away so let's hope the journey is more comfortable than what we have experienced as of late. The only slight flaw in our plan here is that we head to Phuket with not a bank card between us having now all three lost our own. Hyams was first to fall in Laos as a result of drunken frivolities, Felix crumbled second as Bangkok swallowed him up and I was last to go in Koh Samui as a result of no sleep I did indeed leave my bank card in an ATM. With £20 to our name and with three weeks without a single night off, we march forward absolutely destroyed, mentally and physically praying for a rest in Phuket.
