Hi everyone, sorry we're a little late with an update but come on, we are on holiday!
Departure from UK went like clockwork and we arrived slightly jaded and stuffed to the eyeballs on too much Thai Airways food -not much else to do on a plane other than eat, walk to the toilet and back and try to sleep at unnatural hours! However, jadedness disappeared rapidly when we were ushered into one of the local death traps that masquerades as a taxi! Bombing up the super highway to Bangkok at excessive speeds, swinging indescriminately across 4 lanes within 2 inches of the car in front during the morning rush hour only to discover there are no seat belts.............somewhat raised our blood pressure!
Check-in was fast, friendly and allowed us immediate access to our room (at 8.30 in the morning!). You can imagine the triviality of unpacking, trying to regain some sleep and reminding each other of who we are!
By 2pm we are on a river boat (right outside the hotel) and off to central Bangkok to find our bearings. What everyone says about the noise, traffic pollution, thronging hordes and culture shock is all true but massively excitingly vibrant!..........slept well that night after Thai buffet on the banks of the Chao Praya (the river of Bangkok).
Wednesday (28th) saw us independently discovering China Town until we met a well dressed Thai gentleman who insisted on helping us. Huge suspicions were totally unfounded as this man devised a new route on our map and a complete day which involved the use of a tuk tuk (see photo) driver. He, the driver, took us to where we wanted, waited for us, made suggestions of his own and charged us...................65 Baht (one pound!). Not bad for being chauffered from one sacred temple to another with shopping stops thrown in. We said goodbye to him at the zoo and enjoyed a peaceful couple of hours away from the bustle of the city.
Today (Thursday) we decided to use the river express boats and the magnificent sky-rail system. This included visiting Wat Po (a Wat is a temple) where a huge reclining Buddha is housed, and then on to the Royal Palace to view the Emerald Buddha.
Although we have taken loads of photos the computer system in the hotel cannot upload them. Therefore, we will add them when we can.
Weather, incidently, could not be better. Tomorrow we fly to Chiang Mai then connect to Chiang Dao where we will find a jungle of a different kind!
Lovely to have received so many messages. Please keep them coming......we are missing you ..........but surviving!!!!
