David Holmes's Travels
So after all the planning and preparations tonight's the night that we head off to Cambodia. (We haven't finished packing yet!). We are going via Bangkok on BA009. We arrive in Bangkok at around 4.30pm local time and then change planes to go to Siem Reap arriving at about 8pm.
Siem Reap is just north of the western end of the Tonle Sap lake, towards the north west of Cambodia. It is a mix of both the old and new Cambodia, with temples alongside the restaurants, hotels and bars. The city is famed for being the gateway to the awe-inspiring Angkor War temple complex.
We will be working in the Treak Village, which has 1,800 people living in 331 families. Almost 1/3rd of the families (97) are on the official government poverty list and 35 families are classed as living in extreme poverty. This means that they have no land or job or savings or support from family members etc.
We will be helping to build houses, look after the children in the nursery and teaching English in the school.
It is currently about 40°C in Siem Reap so will be a bit of a shock to the system after the weather we have been having here the last couple of days.
