On Friday 11th we drove to Siem Reap, arriving in time to watch the sunset over Angkor Wat. We ended the day watching a performance of traditional Khmer dancing. The whole day on Saturday 12th was spent at Angkor Wat, Ta Prohn (Jungle Temple), Angkor Tom and Bayon. These temple ruins are every bit as spectacular as the guide books say. Being somewhat "templed out", on Sunday 13th we all chose to take a trip on nearby Tonle Sap Lake. This huge lake is home to about 6,000 families - the majority illegal immigrants from Vietnam. We were shocked to see children begging from boats, some paddling around the lake in large plastic bowls with pythons draped around their necks. 13th April is also new years eve in the Buddhist calender and to celebrate the start of the three day holiday there were fireworks at sunset which we enjoyed whilst lazing in the roof top jacuzzi. Happy New Year 2551 BE.
