Hola amigos! Como están?? We hope you are all doing well...
This will be the last blog we write from Central America... After nearly 3 months traveling, we are finally in Panama City, our last stop before South America!
We've had an action packed few weeks since the last blog... Unfortunately I, Queen of Accidents or 'The Glass Woman', managed to quite badly hurt my ribs by landing awkwardly in a swimming pool (only thirty minutes after swinging upside down through the forest on a canopy tour and being absolutely fine - yes i know, only me) so for the last couple of weeks Dave has been carrying 2 backpacks!
Luckily I can walk fine and we managed to do a couple of hikes in the Cloudforests of Monteverde. The first was a night walk, very cool, we saw a tarantula, lots of fireflies and a sloth...oh and lots of sleeping birds (which the other people seemed to find more interesting than us!). It was really cool standing still in the forest at night and all you can hear are the sounds of animals and all you can see are the bright colours of fireflies in the distance. The next day we did a morning hike which was stunning and we saw a snake!!
Next we traveled to San Jose where we briefly saw one of the teachers we taught in Mexico with which was cool, then headed to a very remote place called Tortuguero on the Carribean coast. This place can only be reached by boat and is kind of like a mini amazon. We did another jungle hike and came face to face with an angry monkey who beat his chest at us for a few minutes to let us know who was boss then ran off, was a pretty cool experience as it was just us two and the monkey in the middle of the jungle!
From there we headed to a beachtown called Puerto Viejo. Cool little place to relax, did some snorkelling, sweated in the extreme heat, walked along the beach surrounded by the sound of howler monkeys then ate amazing fish...stressful few days! We also went to a beach that had a sign saying it was one of the top 5 beaches in the world. It was a nice beach but I think there must be more than 5 of those signs around the globe!
From there we headed to the border of Panama, an interesting experience in which we either paid some guy to bribe the immigration guys to let us in without buying an ongoing bus ticket...OR we just gave some random guy ten bucks and got ripped off...either way we got our stamps eventually and hopped on a bus to some islands called Bocas del Toro.
In Bocas we spent lots of time relaxing on gorgeous carribean beaches, snorkelling and dolphin spotting...oh and we saw a sloth with a baby (check pics!)!!! It really is a beautiful place, we liked it there a lot.
From there we got a weird nazi style nightbus to Panama City on which we were strictly forbidden to eat or drink anything other than water...and the guard patrolled the bus with his torch to check on us every 20 mins!!
We have been in Panama City for nearly a week now, staying in an amazing hostal called Lunas Castle, with 150 beds, a huge bar (50 cent beers!), a cinema room, free breakfast pancakes every morning (and coffee which really makes me happy!) and an amazing view of the city skyline. This city is pretty cool and we have met some awesome people, it's been fun! We saw the Panama Canal and got lucky with some big ships going through, pretty impressive...box ticked!
Anyway, think it's time for a cerveza...
Hasta Luego!
