Hey everyone. Hope you all had a good Christmas!
It's been a busy week since we left Guadalajara, and we've been gone for less than a week!
We traveled from Guadalajara to a town called Patzcuaro. This is a cool colonial town with lots of old buildings and a huge lake with islands. You can take a boat out to the main island that has a 40m statue at the top that you can climb up inside. It's a beautiful town, but I think the two days we spent there were enough to see everything.
After that we made our way to a city called Morelia... This is a stunning city with lots of beautiful churches and buildings. We went to a Monarch butterfly sanctuary in the mountains on Christmas Eve. The butterflies fly down to Mexico from Canada! They stay here from about November to March, and then all the females fly back to Canada. The males come to Mexico, mate with like 400 female butterflies, and then die - but what a way to go! The walk through the forest was amazing, with 180 million butterflies flying around you. We'll put a video up soon. We'll also put some photos up but we'll have to do some mass editing. Sar was so excited about them that I think she took enough photos to capture each butterfly individually. We were told an old Indian legend is if one of the butterflies hits you in the face you either have or will have a big family. As I don't currently have a big family, and I got hit in the face like 20 times, don't be surprised if I come back to England with like 100 kids. It was a really cool day, even though we had to put up with by far the craziest guy we've met so far for the 6 hour round trip there and back in his car, which we booked through the hostel. We were the only ones on the trip that day as well. Here's a brief description of him. He's been living in Mexico for about 30 years. I asked him where he'd lived but he just said "everywhere". He has been doing these tours for four years and in his spare time he is an 'energy healer'. He can cure cancer in a one minute session, which is a pretty cool skill to have! He's maybe not that accurate a tour guide either 'cos he told us that giants built all the pyramids in Mexico. He said that he knows what his future life will be, he dreams about it all the time, and he asked me, with a straight face, what my opinions were of humanoid robots usefulness in the future! I just didn't have an answer for him.
We've just spent Christmas day here in Morelia in the hostel. I'm sure we had nearly the same Christmas as you all back home. We managed to watch National Lampoons Christmas Vacation - and we had turkey frankfurters and rice to eat, so not quite how mum does Christmas dinner but, it was ok!
If you're thinking that we're basking in 30 degree heat everyday while it's freezing in England, well, we're not! It is sunny with clear skies everyday but, we're now at a lot higher altitude so it's a lot colder, and at night it can get really cold. Just wanted to mention that so you're all not too jealous We are, though, looking forward to hitting the beach in Puerto Escondido for New Years. Then it'll be really hot - and you can all get jealous again :)
We're back in Mexico City as we're writing this, at the bus station. We've got a 6 hour overnight journey to Oaxaca to look forward to in an hour!
