Our Year of Adventure
We were woken up to a frosty but sunny morning by Nea, "time for breakfast" she excitedly announced. After a very traditional Finnish breakfast, we were going for a tour around the sights of Durham. We even had our own local guide as Nina had got a day off from work. With the girls safely strapped into their seats in the rear, including Maria, the tour began.
After a walk across the river and through some cobblestone streets, it was time for some snacks on a city square. While Nea and Saana ate their 5 fruit and veg of the day, David took out his own treats - a Scottish pie and Yum Yums. Admittedly, he did share and the Yum Yums are, well, pretty yummy but not remotely healthy.
To burn off the calories we climbed up the Cathedral tower, 325 steps to be precise. Nea was very keen to come along, but unfortunately she still was considered bit too small to be allowed up. We promised to take her silly pictures of us jumping on the top. And so we did, trying to avoid the CCTV cameras. The view from the top was quite stunning, a 360 degree panorama of the city and surrounding countryside for miles around. Back on the ground floor, they were raising money for the cathedral by constructing a model of it with Lego and we all contributed by adding our pieces.
Before heading home, we went Hardwick Hall Country Park. It was a huge park so we only managed to see a small corner, which was probably handy because Nea was fast asleep and had to pushed round by Maria. We made our way through the paths, across the bridges and round the lake before arriving at the children's playground. With impeccable timing, Nea woke up and jumped onto the swing.
After dinner, we were invited to have a sauna in one of coolest (kind of contradictory) saunas ever. Billy had taken a standard garden shed, common in most English gardens, and converted it into a traditional Finnish sauna. If it wasn't for the lack of snow outside, you could be mistaken for the country you were in. I wonder what the neighbours think though, if they happen to see over the hedge and see a stream of people going in and out of a garden shed at night with only a towel round their waist...
