Today we crusied into a place called Glacier Bay - a rare visit for cruise ships and one
of the main reasons we chose Holland America (as it is one of two liners that visit).
First thing we saw when we entered was 5 brown bears eating the carcass of a dead whale.
What a find! This was on a nearby beach so the pictures are not that close, but you could
see them with the naked eye swimming to get more food.
Anyhow Glacier Bay was a huge Glacier not 100 years ago when the natives were living in
the area. Due to Global warming the glacier has retreated so much we cruised into it for
over 8 hours. The huge Glacier that used to cover the area the ship was in, left massive
rock formations in the valley and the other Glaciers that fed into it, now stood alone,
feeding into the bay. It was seriously beautiful, although at one point we could see Iceburgs all around us - so much so that Megan had a Titantic moment. Needless to say we survived with the wonder of Radar. We saw about 12 glaciers that day, but the 2 highlights were the Margerie Glacier and the John Hopkins Glacier, that we got to about a mile away from and watched them shed Ice into the bay. The sound is so intense and seeing it is like seeing an avalanche - indescribable! There was also some great rangers from the park on board who were extremely helpful and informative.
That night Megan and I ordered room service to our Cabin, and had Giant Shrimps, followed by Lobster and fillet Mingon, and then Cheesecake... what more can anyone ask for?
Oh yes a dip in the hottub after a brisk cold walk around the ship to see the stars. What
and amasing day.
Sorry about the spelling, we are in a bad computer area with no spell check :-)
