DAY 1: Home-Snowtown (South Australia). Story by Joanna and Melaine
Additional comments by Neil Sharon Terry and Tanya in italics
Our Adventures began with a 5:30am wake-up. (should have been 5am)The car already packed prior to our departure; we left our house by 6:30am, (should have been 6am) not to be seen again for another two and a half months. We first headed to Horsham for our mutual meeting point to begin our holiday. There we met Terry and Tanya, our fellow travelers. After a relaxing coffee we were back on the road ready to face 10 hours of driving. We made a second stop at Coonalpyn SA for mountain bread wraps and Tanya's homemade Coconut cake, which we hoed into, knowing we would not be eating this sort of food once we reached the Outback. We pushed on, passing the scenic Adelaide Hills and also something quite intriguing that caught our eye, a pink lake. This lake had a pinkish appearance to it, due to the salt underneath the water. After emptying the fuel tank quite a bit after all the miles we had made, a petrol stop at Nhill was an essential. Back in the car Joanna and I slept the rest of the way. After an exhausting full day on the road we arrived at Snowtown, South Australia at about 4pm. Snowtown is most commonly known for the old bank murders, where a local resident murdered 11 innocent people, then put the bodies in barrels and hid them in the old bank in Snowtown. It was creepy seeing where this actually happened and knowing we were sleeping near where the bodies were discovered. Champagne to celebrate our first night and Terry’s home-made spaghetti Bolognese went down like a treat. All extremely tired; we were in bed by 8:30pm ready to face our next day discovering the beauty of Australia.
