Woke up to sun. Sun! The fjord was less oppressive without the looming greyness. We went into Vik again this morning where we bought some lunch to make later on and then travelled further out into the mountains where we were presented with the thickest snow I've ever seen. The drive up was as green as The Sound Of Music starring Kermit The Frog, but the further up we got, the more the snow seemed to have its dominion. The houses out there were 75% - 90% buried in the snow.

Today has been my favourite day so far. I've learnt that it's the basic things that lift your spirits. We had a long conversation with Ølaf, the waiter at the local cafe who was 24 yet had the most amazing stories to tell. He'd been in the marines where he'd flown a Sea King after no lessons, he's starting up his own paint balling business, he's been all over the uk (and knows of Leeds). I had the house special for the day which was catfish at 149 NOK and was delicious, but Ølaf also got me to drink some Akvavit which is the national liquor made from herbs such as caraway or dill and natured in oak casks, it was potent but it felt good to have something Norwegian (I had some brown goats cheese for lunch which I didn't really enjoy). We learnt that every May 17th there's a national independence day celebration in Bergen, so we're gonna travel there to catch that. Tonight we made a fire back at the campsite. It was pretty impressive. But it taught me that basic human interaction with someone, and one of natures simplest things - a fire, can lift spirits.
Financial fail of the day:
£7.58 for a shot of dill liquor which the waiter got me to try, but admitted, after I drank it, that he hated it.
