There are numerous villages around the lagoon, all at the base of various live volcanoes. Each village has it's own specific vibe.. We chose a relaxed, chilled party kinda place which sees a lot of long term visitors book into one of the many Spanish language schools. It's easy to see why, the place is gorgeous and the vibe is great. Heaps of expats have settled here for near permanent periods. We even found some Brooklyn brewery IPA.. Yum. The funny part though is that many of the gringos have taken it upon themselves to build along the waters edge, everyone loves waterfront right?? Well, if they had done their research they would have noticed that the lagoon is slightly volatile.. In the last 5 years, the lake had risen 5 metres, a couple of years ago it rose half that in just a month or so after some heavy rain. So there's all these houses and shops underwater.. Kinda funny really. The water level will eventually drop again I guess, unless it rains.
We were kind of hoping to climb a volcanoes here but Jess has been pretty crook, 2 days in bed and just hanging out with the locals has been fun.
Oh, a side note, Central Americans love to use a certain type of shower head, it's handy as it heats it's own water.. A little bit, not that I've ever wanted a warm shower for so long now.. But that's how it is. Anyway, it's weird seeing exposed electrical wires hanging out in the shower. Jess has concerns about being electrocuted during a shower.. She worries too much!!
Maybe
So, this shower was ok.. Until I hear BANG.. Scream.. Bang.. Scream.. What's Jess doing in there?? I open the door to see Jess freaking out, the room full of smoke and the shower is fully arcing! Maybe the communal showers downstairs would be better..fun
Time to head off though. A boat ride to panajachel on the other side of the lake sees us in a very different place.
