It's so nice to be warm again here in San Francisco! The weather is a balmy 16C with no rain or snow to be seen. We've been here 4 days now and we really like the city. On our first day we went to Fisherman's Wharf and saw the sea lions. We also spent ages looking around Pier 39 which has loads of different sorts of shops. We went to China town in the evening for dinner. There were duck tongues, frogs and all sorts of other stuff on the menu. We both had chicken.
The next day was Shil's birthday. We stayed in a nice hotel for her birthday and ordered breakfast in the bedroom. We then went to Union Square and went shopping at Macy's and Bloomingdales. After that Shil had a massage at the hotel. For dinner we went to a really nice seafood restaurant. When Shil's dessert arrived it had a candle and had "Happy Birthday" written in chocolate sauce around the edge of the plate. So she had a very nice birthday.
On Tuesday we attempted to go on a tour of Alcatraz, however we missed the last boat which was at around lunch time. We decided to get the bus to Golden Gate Park which is at the other side of the city. By the time we got there most of the attractions had closed so we just wandered around the park for a while until it started to get dark. There were lots of busy roads that criss-crossed all through the park, so it wasn't that peaceful. We got to see the outskirts of the city though, which was nice. We went to Hard Rock Cafe in the evening. Shil had never been to one before and liked it, although she said the food was too filling and felt a bit sick afterwards. Poor little girl!
Today we actually got to Alcatraz. We had a nice boat ride there and enjoyed the audio tour. There was lots of information about the island's history from when it was a fort, to becoming a prison, then being a place of protest for the Native Indians, to becoming a tourist attraction. We heard stories and saw how people had tried to escape including the escape tunnel that was made famous in the Clint Eastwood film "Escape from Alcatraz" where the prisoners dug their way out of their cells with spoons. It has been beautiful weather so we got really nice views of the city and Golden Gate Bridge. This evening we are going to go to "The Cheesecake Factory" at Macy's for a meal and of course cheesecake.
We have just sorted out car hire for our road trip around California. We plan to leave tomorrow morning and head for Yosemite and Sequoia National Parks to see the giant trees. It will be nice to get out on the open road (once we're happy with driving on the wrong side of the road!) and live the American dream.
