Hi Folks,
After over 2000km around South Island in a camper van with a slightly dodgy steering rack it was quite a relief to hand it back in Christchurch and sit back in the comfortable (!) seats of a New Zealand Airways turbo-fan as it flew us up to Auckland at the top of North Island. Only a short hop and enlivened for us by a 16 month-old little girl and her mother in the seat next to us. Between us we ran through all the 'baby games' and it made us realise how much we miss our grandson Oliver.
Our friends Sue and Dave welcomed us into their home and we have had a week of 'chilling out' and generally relaxing - although the days have not been without interest! Having seen Burt Munro's Indian and Velocette motorcycles down in Invercargill and spoken to the current owner who swore he would keep them in perpetuity, it was a shock to hear it reported on NZTV that one was up for auction! But it turned out to be another Velocette that Munro had worked on. We attended the auction in Auckland and saw it go for an astonishing $83,000. Such is the Munro legend...
The Who were in Auckland and the tickets were only for the well-heeled. BUT... Sue had a plan! Thus we were to be seen OUTSIDE the stadium, parked up on the grass verge with beers in hand, listening to a free concert. And boy, were they loud - at least, they were when the amps were working. We were not the only ones partaking of a free concert... alongside us an enterprising group enjoyed it from the comfort of a three-piece suite on the back of a pick-up. The police turned up, grinned, then went away. Only in New Zealand...
We are in the process of adding another folder of photos of our tour of South Island and these should appear shortly.
We are off on our tours again next week, up to the Matakana region north of Auckland. Laura, a very nice lady we met at a pub quiz, has offered us the use of her holiday home in Leigh, near Matheson's Bay and Cape Rodney.
Best wishes to all,
Dave and Denise
PS I have just tried to upload some photos but the computer decided not to play so I will try again later.
PPS All loaded on now, so we hope you enjoy them!
