Day 36 - We woke up to a less crowded Venice and headed off to make the most use of our water bus passes. After a short walk back to the Piazza del Marco (where we were at midnight last night) we boarded the water bus for a 10 minute ride out to Murano Island. Murano is famous for its glass sculptures and shortly after arriving we were at a working factory where we were shown a short demo by a master glass craftsman on how they made some of these sculptures. To become a true master of this trade can take up to 20 years and like true artists they each become famous for their unique styles. All pieces sold carry their personal signatures. A visit to a gallery displaying rooms of finished pieces for sale by a few masters had price tags from 200 euros up to 200,000 euros (for pieces like large chandeliers.) The town centre had many tourist shops also selling the glass products. A fair bet that these didn't come from China. It was lunch at Murano town centre then on another water bus for a rather crowded 20 minute ride to the island of Burano. This island features many canals rows of brightly painted houses as well as the usual eateries and tourist shops. We were back in Venice by 4pm with a casual stroll back to our hotel.
