Hey everyone,
Sorry its been such a long time since we updated the blog to let you all know what we've been up to. Been really busy doing lots since we got here its been over a month now which has just flown by!!!
Well we were in Perth for about 2 and a half weeks and it was really nice. We did quite a few things while we were there. We went to Fremantle for the day which was ok but to be honest theres not that much there. There are some really old buildings and stuff and we went to the Maritime Museum to have a look round and got to go on a submarine which was quite cool. We also went to Kings Park which was really nice, the weather on that day was really nice aswell so it was great walking around the Botanical Garden. Most days we just walked round town, looking in all the shops we couldn't buy from and having coffee in the little cafes which are all around the city. Perth is such a small city really and the high street just reminded me of Romford really but with no Primark unfortunately!!!!!! Everybody we spoke to said it was one of the more expensive cities for backpackers as the market isn't as big as it is on the East Coast but they are starting to do lots of backpacker nights in pubs and clubs to make it cheaper. The hostel we stayed in was really nice aswell all the people were friendly. There are so many Irish people wherever you stay in Oz so its always loud but funny. We both looked for work but didn't seem to be getting many calls so after just over a week we had received all of our bank documents and tax numbers and could move on. We both wanted to do the West Coast so we booked an 8 day tour up to Exmouth which is just below Broome.
We got picked up really early for our tour and it was a struggle getting up as we have both become lazy since we've been here laying in most days!!!! All the days on our tour were really packed with things to do so we were really looking forward to it. When we got on the bus our tour guide divided the bus into two teams and put me and Dal as the team captains. We had to play games and things to get points for our team and then on the Thursday evening your team had to make up a song and dance and perform to see which team would win. Well I was dreading it as im so crap at that sort of thing but I had a good team and one of the girls was on English teacher and I made her vice captain so she could do most of it. Our first day we went to a sanctuary where we got to see Koalas but they were really high in the trees so couldn't see them to well. We then went and did sand boarding which was wicked you sit on a snowboard type board and go down a massive dune on it. It was really windy and the sand was in every nok and crany by the time we finished but it was great. The person who go the furthest on the board without falling off got points for their team. This was me by miles on my first go and I only had two. Dal being Dal has to have three goes though and on his last go beat me but a little bit and got the point but I still think I deserved them but we won't argue about that!!!!!!! We stopped for lunch and then drove to our first hostel for the week which was really nice in a place called Cervantes. We got split into boy and girl dorms which was fine by me as I got rid of Dal for a few hours!!! We dropped our bags in went to the bottle shop to get some drinks then went to see the Pinnacles for sunset. They are these rock formations made of limestone. There are thousands of them and some are in weird shapes theres one that looks like and angel and one that looks like batman aswell. We stayed there for about an hour but it started to rain and the sunset wasn't very good. In the evening we just chilled out in the hostel after dinner and watched tv and had a few drinks.
Our second day we got up for another early start and headed to Grenough wild life park where we got to feed Kangaroos, camels, horses, pigs, goats, sheep and even an emu which I didn't feed at it pecked you but Dal did and it bit his finger. The best thing though was we got to hold snakes there were two little ones, two middle size ones and a big one. Some of the girls were crapping themselves though which was quite funny. We headed down the road and got to see some horizontal trees which grow that way due to the wind which was pretty strange. Then we left the country and entered the Hutt River Province, a small breakaway country and the second largest on this continent. We got to meet Prince Leonard and Princess Shirley and they told us all the history behind Hutt River Province. They are a recognised country all over the world, have their own passports, currency, stamps you name it they have it. We got our passports stamped aswell so another one to add to the collection. We then headed to Kalbarri National Park where we were going to be staying for the night in another hostel. We got to walk down to the beach and watch the sunset which was great and in the evening had our first Oz BBQ, while sinking a few tinnys outside.
Day three you guessed it another early start we headed into Kalbarri National Park to the Loop and Natures Window before arriving at Z Bend gorge. We hiked down into this 400 million year old landscape and get surrounded by sheer cliffs. We had the option of doing an abseil which me and a few of the other girls did. I couldn't believe how scared I was going over the edge but it was great once I got going, although had abit of a quick landing as it was burning my hands. We got to do it twice and had the option of going down front ways which I passed on but two of the girls did which was amusing to watch. We head off and go to see the Stromatalites which are apparently some of the oldest lifeforms in the world that create oxygen, they just looked like rocks in the sea to me!!!!!! We then got to Shark Bay and went to Shell beach which was lovely. We spent the night in Nanga Bay Resort where they have a hot Artisian Spa which we all sat in for hours drinking. The teams had to decide what their routine was gonna be aswell so we all had a laugh sorting that out. Once we got out of there though it was freezing and you couldn't wait to get into bed.
Day four today we had to be up early to get to Monkey Mia, this is where wild dolphins come up to the shore each morning, the older ones get fed a few fish but the younger ones need to learn how to catch their own so wont get fed until they are about 10 years old. We got there and there were loads of people on the beach so we didn't really get a good view. We were going to be staying there for a few hours as they come back abit later aswell and there are less people around. Nobody is allowed to stand in the water while they are there and your not allowed to touch them. They pick people out of the crowd to come and feed a few of them a fish and I got chosen but Dal didn't have the camera out. Today was our longest day of driving and we head further north to a sheep station where we will be staying for the night. On route we played Master Mind to get some points for the team it got down to one person from each team but my team lost. We got the sheep station and had to collect firewood and sort our stuff for the evening before it got dark. We would all be sleeping outside tonight we had beds but they were pulled out and you got a sleeping bag. This was also the night for our performances so before and after dinner we all got time to practice our songs and dances. Dinner was great we had a roast, we had some of the best food since we've been away on this trip thanks to Terry our tour guide who was a legend!!! After dinner we played games which was hillarious to get points for our teams. My team lost all but 1 of the games and were down 10-25 by the time it came to the dance. We had 10 mins to prepare for our performace and my team was doing a Timewarp theme and dressed up the boys as ladies which was hillarious. Our song was called the Bunnyhop and we had a dance and song our finally was the boys running out and doing the last corus with us. Dals was done by one of the irish girls and they changed the words to an irish song which was quite funny but not as good as ours. Although our song and dance won we lost overall as they were to far infront. They got some champagne but we all shared it anyway which was all good. We then all sat round the camp fire and some of them were singing and stuff and we finally went to bed about 12pm and it was freezing. Everyone couldn't wait for the night to be over so we could get back on the bus and be warm again.
Day five everyone was up early as most people couldn't sleep in the cold anymore. We had breakfast and headed to Coral Bay where we would have most of the day to ourselves. We got to go on trips or just chill on the beach. The weather was great aswell which made a change from Perth. We went on a glass bottom boat trip and we got to go snorkelling which was cool. Some of the fish we saw were massive and I didn't get in as they were feeding them and they were jumping all over people, I would of freaked out. We got back and got some breakfast and then walked along the beach for abit before just sitting in the sun and chatting to Terry. Some of the others went on a different tour and they got back about 4.30pm and we headed off to Exmouth where we would be staying for the next two nights. It was the opening night of the bar at the hostel so the whole town was there. We weren't going to go as eveyone was just chatting in the rooms. At about 10.30pm the girls said lets just go for a few to see how scary the locals are. We went down to see if the boys were coming and they were all asleep so we went and had a few drinks and it was pretty funny watching all these crazy people dancing about. There was even a fight which topped off the night and the police were called so very exciting!!!!!
Day six, we got a layin today and then we all got ready to go down to a place called Tourquise Bay where we got to snorkel. It was such a great beach but the water was freezing. We all snorkelled and we saw two turtle which was amazing, a sea snake, sea cucumbers, some clams and loads of fish. One of the boys saw a shark but only a baby one think I would of been scared anyway. We went back to the hostel after lunch and chilled out and in the evening went on a walk around Cape Range National Park. We had a really nice meal on our last night in the resturant with everyone, two people were staying in Exmouth and we were heading back down to Perth the next day so said goodbye. We chilled out having drinks in the evening and just chatted most of the night really.
Day seven we were up to start our journey back down to Perth. We had a long drive with a few stops on the way for lunch and loo breaks. In the evening we were staying in Northampton in an old convent which was abit scary really. We had fish and chips for dinner and played a game at the end to decide which team would wash up. Guess what my team lost again so we were on washing up duty but we didn't mind we were used to it!!!!! We sat having a few drinks and some watched tv, most people went to bed pretty early as we were all so tired.
Day eight our last day we had another long drive with a few stops for food and stuff. We arrived back to Perth at about 1.30pm and got dropped back at our hostel. We got everyones email addresses to keep in touch which was good and a couple Zoe and Nick were going to be travelling on the train to Adelaide a few days later with us which was good.
We were back in Perth for only 2 days before we had to get the train to Adelaide. Didn't really get up to much just did loads of washing and stuff before we had to catch the train really.
Catch the next part of our adventure on the next blog entry.
