Day 5
Early bike ride for me, thought I had better let Nicole get some sleep after I kept her awake with my snoring. Banished to the tent tonight. Fair Enough!
Rode out around the mine shafts on the western side of the highway. Bloody tough way to earn a living I reckon. The shafts are not covered and very deep you really do need to watch your step.
After breakfast we headed into the town centre for a look. Umoona Opals, the underground Catholic Church, C.P. Visitor centre, the Big (broken down) Winch,
Back to the van for a cup of tea and a sit down. Just long enough for Matilda to stack her bike grazing her face and elbow. Never a dull moment! Out with the band aids and saline solution and then straight into a mini van for a tour with George the guide of the moon rock plains (gliver rock) and Breakaway ranges. George was an interesting tour guide, he was interested in what he was interested in but didn't acknowledge anything he wasn't interested in. There were two older women who were obviously well travelled and equally out spoken he virtually ignored for half the trip!! Matilda (with a grazed face) ripped out her "What do you call a camel with 3 humps" joke "Pregnant!" which loosened up the crowd.
The moon rock plains can reach temperatures up to 65degs in the summer. It was around this area the film Mad Max was filmed also the films Pitch Black, Pricilla Queen of the desert and another one that none of us can remember.
We stopped for a close look at a section of the dog fence. The dog fence was originally a 9700km fence from Ceduna to the Brisbane coast designed to keep dingoes and other wild dogs out of the sheep country to the south. Today it is approximately 5600km long with a lot of the original posts and star pickets still intact. Interestingly the wire is threaded through the holes in the star pickets and through holes drilled in the original posts. Longest man made structure in the world.
We had a couple of stops in the Breakaways the final stop was to watch the stunning sunset with a cup of tea and a biscuit.
Back to home base for a Carbonara, game of UNO and bed.
