Day 25 2nd August
By Olivia
OHD- We wake up ready to start our day and set off on an adventure. We head off to the Bowali visitors centre, on the way we saw a hotel shaped like a crocodile, it even had teeth. Also we wanted to go to the uranium mine but your not allowed alcohol and you know Mum and Dad (there's alcohol in the van. Ranger Mine have a Zero Alcohol tolerance even in vehicles) We arrived at the visitors centre and saw a long neck turtle and a gigantic fork tailed cat fish it was huge. We went for a walk (East Alligator River) and saw some rangers, the night before they caught a crocodile it was 2.5 metres long. They tagged it, released it and named it Mac after the student ranger. Then Ranger Fred showed us in his hand the crocodiles fin it was yuk, it still had some of the skin in there and it was bleeding. Then we went to have a look for a crocodile at the jetty. (Cahill Crossing) There before our eyes 3 giant crocs swam across the river. I think the crocodiles are no harm but mum is a bit nervous about them.
We decided that we wanted to go and have a look at the cave paintings at Ubirr (pronounced oo-birr) rock. First we saw some paintings but they were covered because the aboriginal don't want white people to see their stories the paintings at Ubirr are different because they were not dots like in Uluru. Next we saw paintings in a cave there were long neck turtles and fish and thylacine.
The paintings are made of red ochre and animal blood. Some of the paintings are 5,000 years old and some are 2,000 years old. (Records of the worlds oldest living culture)
Then Matilda spotted a smooth hole in a rock Mum said they probably used it for grinding nuts and berries or for grinding red oaka. Up a bit more there were some paintings on the roof of the cave, I am still imagining how they got up there? We finally get to the top and the view of the floodplain is absolutely amazing :) We climb back down to the bottom and have a big drink. We go to the cafe down the road (Border Store) and have toasted sandwiches we sit down but we had to move because there was a big red wasp annoying us. Then we go back to the camp site and have a big long swim (and a sun bake.) we head back to the camper to have some tea, for tea we have carbonara. After dinner me, Grace and Matilda finish off our movie and go to bed.
.
And it keeps getting better and better
Kids have been great all day!
Sat outside listening to Spotify! Watching mosquitoes, the size of a small bird, laughing at our pathetic attempt to keep them at bay.
Danced to our wedding song (Stand by me) by citronella candle light!
