Ok, so we arrived in Langkawi, Malaysia about 8 pm. We should of been here about 6 but because of ferry delays it took longer. We got in to a cab and told him were to take us. We checked out about 6 guesthouses and everyone was full. It was the Muslim new year here and everyone had arrived in Langkawi to celebrate. We stopped of at this irish bar called debbie's. A sign above the door said something along the lines of "One arm Debbie" Ok, so an irish women with one arm i guess. No, a Malaysian women with one arm who goes by the name of Debbie. Here we got chatting to some Americans who worked over here in Kuala Lumpar and also some English lad. We arranged to meet them later. We eventually found one for 35 rm a night. That's about 4 pounds. It was about as basic as you can get. If i described it as a prison cell you might get a picture of what it's like. Three beds, a couple of windows with bars, poor decor and no bed sheets. A communal shower and toilet. At least we have a place to stay. It's owned by some Iranian who turned out to be hilarious. Definitely a few slices short of a loaf. We headed back to meet the other lads and spent the rest of the night there getting drunk. We bumped in to some Swedish girls who recognized us as they was on the same boat to Koh Lipe. we spoke with them and met some more guys from Denmark, Sweden and Norway. After the bar had closed at 2 am we all headed down the beach to continue drinking until the sunrise. hey supplied the alcohol so why not.
The next day we spent on the internet and down the beach. The english lad had joined me and mark by this time so we just threw a ball about for most of the time whilst topping up our tans. We have to make the most of the sun here as the rest of Malaysia has monsoon's. Me and mark went back to our Guesthouse and joined the crazy iranian and some other travellers for some beers. We was also joined by an old guy who was a diamond dealer from london. I now know all the tricks in the trade so any girl who marries me can expect a fake. The iranian and Diamand dude had some great debates about fakes. About 10 30 me and mark headed back out to Debbie's to grab some dinner. Here we met Nick and Neal again so we had a few jugs of beer and then headed to some bar called the Reggea bar. I think every place we havew been to has had a place called that. We spent the evening listening to a really good live band, dancing and playing darts. Here we met another group of Swedish girls. I swear the worlds population must be dominated by sweeds. The drummer from the band had long dreeds down to his arse. He hasn't had a hair cut for sixteen years. Come 4 am it was time to close so we headed home.
Today we was all meant to get some mo peds out and go and explore. The main attraction being a 620 meters cable cart. Mark decided not to come as he felt too drunk to drive. Neal didn't have a driving licence on him so he couldn't rent a bike out so it was just me and nick. As soon as we got them the heavens opened up. It chucked it down for ten minutes so we found refuge under some shouter. No sooner than it had cleared it was scorching hot sunshine again so off we went. We stopped off at some oriental village place which was really nice. Beautiful buildings and expensive shops. Well expensive as far as malaysia goes. We checked it out for twenty mins and then got in the cable cart. I have never witnessed anyone being so nervous as i did with Nick. His hands were dripping with sweat. It was a bit of a hairy climb but once we had reached the first stage at 500 meters it was certainly worth it. The views were magnificent. You could see for miles and miles. All of the island. The different colours of the sea were almost untrue. Time to go to the next stage. Another 120 meters to go. The views were pretty much the same up here, amazing. An ideal place to propose to a girl as nick said. Here we walked accross a massive suspension connecting to mountains together. An impressive piece of structural enginerring. It beats me how people can come up with these plans, let alone build them. We headed back down much to Nicks relief. From here on we checked out a swanky hotel with a nice beach and then took off in to the mountains passing many beautiful sights and plenty of monkeys. On the way back we decided to stop at the airport as we had been told there was a macdonald's there. To our disapointment there wasn't. Here i lost my key and had to re trace my steps. I had left it in a shop. Hungry, we decided to head back for sunset on the beach with the others. Tonight we had a few beers in our guesthouse and then watch football in Debbie's bar. Great night for football with me supporting man u and mark following newcastle. 6-0, get in. After here we went to the reggea bar which was shut so then we went to an afterparty at the little reggea bar. Soon after arriving we went home.
Today we was leaving for the Perhentian ialands on the east coast. We was unsure where to go next as of the monsoon season is on the east coast but we decided to chance it. A marathon of a journey was yet to come.
Langkawi is a beautiful holiday resort. A clean place with plenty of cheap shopping. It's a tax free island so you pay about 30 p a beer, 4.20 for 200 cigarettes and 4.60 for a liter of smirnoff. If only there was more places like this in the world. This is a very clean and modern country compared to what we have seen since being away. The people are extremly friendly and helpfull. No one tries to rip you off which is great. Bring on the rest of Malaysia
