Blog Day 171 Mon 24th October 2011
Today Queen Elizabeth is in town. Her majesty has come to Brisbane & will be cruising down the river to South bank, to open up the new rainforest walk which was damaged by the floods last year. It's also time for us to check out of this amazing apartment & start living like true campers.
After packing away all our things we take a walk down to the boardwalk. They said in the papers that her Maj was due to start her river cruise at 11am so this is when we head down for. An hour and a half later she cruises pass, a slight turn up of the corners of the mouth & that significant wave & in seconds it's all over. Still fancy coming all the way to Oz & and waving at the Queen!
After this we leave Brisbane & drive to Surfers Paradise. The birthplace of that wonderful invention………The Bikini!
The weekend just gone Surfers held the Gold coast 600 motor racing meaning that as we pull into Surfers traffic is at a standstill, it's quite nice to see the roads they would have just raced around as people are at work dismantling the barriers & stands. We have no idea where we are going to stay tonight so we pull up, grab a parking ticket & go for a walk through the town. After wandering around the town for a bit we go and check out the beach which is full of toned and tanned bodies not to mention the huge waves, a true surfers paradise!
We give our Fraser Island Canadian friends a call to see where they stayed when they were here, only to discover that they are still here & are staying at the Surf n sun backpackers. It's $30 for the night to camp on a piece of concrete know as their parking lot, it is cheaper than a room & cheaper than any other camping ground that is around here (we spent the last half hour ringing round). We chill out watching Blood Diamond in the TV room & catch up with the guys. It's Colin's last night in Australia so the boys are having a few drinks before heading out. We unfortunately can't go out because Dan still has no shoes & for some stupid reason clubs out here have a 'guys must wear shoes rule after 9pm'. So we cook dinner & have a couple of 'send off' beers learning how to play the very cool game of beer pong with Curtis.
The hostel shuts its outside area at 10pm something that most hostels do out here to encourage people to move out to the local pubs & clubs. So the boys head off & we decide to go for a stroll along the beach instead. After making a huge sunbathing naked lady sandcastle when head back to the camper, covered in sand!
