We took the overnight sleeper bus to Puno! We were pleased to see that the seats nearly went into fully declined position and were feeling content as we left Cuzco.....that was until be both broke out in a sweat due to the heat of the bus a short time later. We arrived in Puno at 5.30am, smelly tired and ready for bed although we had to prepare ourselves for our next tour at 7.30am. Off to Lake Titicaca to the floating villages. As the boat left the run down harbour our eyes soon fell to the back of our heads. With a quick shut eye we were back in action ready to see what the day would bring. The floating villages appeared. Made out of reeds, the house, the beds, seats and even the island itself! Man made floating islands out of reads. Fascinating to say the least but a mouldy smell from the rotting reeds was not ignored. The villagers were dressed in their traditional attire. Ladies in long skirts, colourful shirts and hair in plats, even the grannies. A few hours later we reach Uryo Island, and meet our family who welcomes us to a home stay. Again the ladies and children dressed in traditional clothing. A 20min stroll up the hill and we reach our family's home, a very basic mud brick house with a shared outdoor toilet and cold shower with a tiny kitchen resembling a chook shed. But it's cosy and warm which is the main thing as the lake's breeze is cold. Stone fences and farm animals are scattered across the island. The island is quiet and lacks atmosphere but it is peaceful and clean. We leave the next morning for another island where we take a short 2 hour trek and partake in a culture lesson about the islands and their people. Back to Puno in the arvo followed by a crappy dinner. Frozen Alpaca was not enjoyed but we did get a much needed long shuteye. Off to Bolivia bright and early ready for our next journey.
