Most of this day took place on a train. Not even a good train either, I have to say. Our list of grievances was long and formulated within a few minutes of being on the train;
There were no power sockets (for Dan's camera charging) the leg and footrests wouldn't work, meaning we could recline our seats but ol' stumpy legs here (yes, me) couldn't rest her feet anywhere! (We used our backpacks to make leg rests) The carrage we were on was pretty old too and so it was a bit dusty and dirty and I was sneezing lots. This was made worse by the awful state of the toilets which only proceeded to get worse by the hour. I ended up having to walk to different carriages (so nice and new compared to ours!) to use the toilet. Oh, yes, and the cherry on the cake... 2 screaming children.
But the 23 and a half hours practically flew by. Ok, so that's a lie. But we made to Miami eventually! Having travelled through quite a few states (we tried to track our progress using the 5 state rummy cards donated by Dan's sister) and we were met at Miami station by Gita, and old family friend. It was lovely to see her and she gave us a lift in her very swanky Lexus to the hostel. It was bliss, and the clostest to feeling like first-class travellers we've got all trip.
The hostel is nice. It's far too youthful for an oldie like me. The trance music is pumping all day and well into the night. Unfortunately our bedroom backs onto the foyer, where the music is played. So not so much fun. Anyone who knows me will know that Trance is the one type of music I just don't understand. But lovely hot showers and the beds aren't bad. So it's fine. Met some nice Aussie boys who are sharing our room, they're leaving in the morning though so we haven't been able to chat much.
Dan and I took to Ocean drive after much needed showers and stuff for a late dinner. It's so pretty round here. Kind of reminds me of Italy, by the sea, all the hotels and restaurants spill out onto the pavements and the cool Art Deco architecture is outlined in bright neon lights. The restaurants are all pretty pricey though, and we weren't dressed for anywhere fancy so we managed to find the one sea-front diner in Miami. I swear, it's some kind of second sense for Dan or something, he can sense their presence. But it's a pretty renowned diner (we stumbled upon it but then realised we'd heard lots about it) called Johnny Rockets. The food was good and not too pricey for how full we were. Dan also got a milkshake so he was a happy boy. It was nice just walking up and down Ocean Drive together though, quite romantic and nice just to hang out with Dan. It felt like a "real holiday" as he pointed out to me, and he's right. I think maybe it's because it's warm... I don't know.
Oh yes, the warmth. It's very warm here, pushing the 90s (f) but Dan is coping like a trooper, he's doing very well do far. Although he'd likened it to steamy bathrooms etc. already. Luckily the hostel is airconditioned! Saying that, this is cooler than most of the places left on our list... Could get interesting, I'll try and keep you posted.
Oh yes, just a heads up, we're travelling to non-hostelly places for a while now. I will try and get to internet cafes, but if the blog is not updated for a while, that would be why!
