Hello peeps,
We rolled off the ferry and drove downtown Wellington- very nice city, spent the weekend there had a great curry and there was lots of cool shops but thankfully for the budget and my own safety they were all closed due to easter weekend.
We headed East next to Napier which is a town with a strong Art Deco influence it was ok but it wasn't quite my cuppa tea (Mike). We didn't stay for too long before driving on to Lake Taupo. We loved it there the weather was fantastic and we went for a bike ride, we didn't get very far as when we got to start of the track there was a marshall there and he told us that about 120 professional mountain bikers were due to pass through pretty soon. He said we were welcome to carry on the track but Dan bottled it, she is such a girl!!! Then the time came...........BUNGY!!!!! The setting was right, the air was still, all was quiet until I leapt 43 metres down and plunged my head into the beautiful river, it was brilliant!!! Dan didn't fancy it as she had just washed her hair.
We got to National Park our base for the Tongariro Crossing. It is a 17 kilometere walk up and over and down volcanic mountains taking in diverse scenery, crater lakes, geothermal rocks etc. It was quite a challenge but really rewarding.
Next on the agenda was Rotorua,  it was a bit smelly - as there are alot of geothermal mud pools around the town. We did the tourist thing and went to a Maori concert + hangi where we watched a musical performance followed by a roast dinner cooked in traditional Maori fashion underground on hot rocks. very tasty. We went to Hells Gate geothermal park which was smelly but quite amazing.
On our way out of town, we stopped off at the Agrodome to do a spot of Zorbing. Dan and I got into a giant inflatable ball with a bucket of water thrown in, then rolled down a great big hill, it was wicked, I have not heard Dan giggle so much in a long time.
Then we headed out to the coast and stopped at Mt Maunganui then onto Hahei where we went to the beautiful Cathedral Cove.
We finished our trip up north at the Bay of Islands where we did a boat trip around the bays. We were surrounded with lots of playful Bottlenose dolphins and we attempted to swim with them but unfortunately they were a bit too fast to keep up with. We stopped for lunch at a lovely beach and made the most of the tranqulity before our journey to South America.
Hope you are all well and enjoying the sunshine.
Lots of love
