Hey, today was manic in a good way- I basically saw most of Singapore in a day- me, suzanne, bhavna and may walked from the hostel to Little India, then spent a couple of hours going all around Little India, checking out all the malls (so nice- we loved the thousands of designer watches, and looked through stacks of Indian fabric and sarongs. I love the weather here- its hot and humid, reminds of Egypt where I used to live. It smells tropical and the city is quite lively. The laws and rules here are pretty interesting- it makes it so safe here. I love the pedestrian crossings telling you how many seconds you have left to cross the road. We walked miles round Little India and saw the flower arrangements being made, buckets of dried chill's for sale and loads of spices. We saw some beautiful temples- Bhavna is Indian and she was telling us about the folklore and the daities.
We then walked from Little India to the city mall, getting a bit lost on the way to make it more interesting- we found Bugis village and explored the street stores, watched a guy make figurines of people, watched a guy advertising his restaurant that sold snakes, yummy, and brought a good wedge of ice cream between wafers (definitely yummy). We eventually got to the city mall and the fountain of wealth- the largest fountain in the world. MAy (who's chinese) explained the traditions of chinese new year to us and said this is the year of the Ox - my year :-) We planned to go out in the evening to china town to celebrate the chinese new year :-)
May then had to go and start her course (studying here in singapore) and me, suzanne and bhavna walked south through the War memorial Park, then walked and saw the cenotaph, the city hall, the old supreme court building, Easplanade park, the Theatres on the bay. We walked along the esplanade bridge to the Merlion and sat down there for a bit. Then we walked to raffles place and took MRT back to hostel, had quick shower and then went to China Town. I loved china town- we walked everywhere, stood on New Bridge Rd and watched the new years celebrations! It was awesome- loads of bright, amazing floats went up the road and there was live entertainment. Took some videos- they set off a giant firecracker and then had dragons walk the streets. We walked to Smith Street and brought some food- noodles :-) We saw chinese temples and brought some souvenirs.
We took MRT to Raffles and went to the Long Bar at Raffles hotel- stunning hotel (designer stores, beautiful building) and we had the legendary sling- but it was quite funny cus they cost 27.00 dollars each lol, bit expensive!! It was the best cocktail Ive ever had, got the recipe for it for the future. The music was fab, the old looking bar was beautiful. We stayed there for a while then walked from there back across singapore to our hostel. We realised when we got in that we'd walked bloody far- we all had blisters lol. We'd walked about for 15 hours. Got back at 1am and went online til about 2ish.
We planned to go to Bukit Timah national reserve the next day (sunday) as I really wanted to see it and the others hadnt heard of it- we wanted to do something non-touristy and see the natural side of singapore- a city day and then a nature day :-)
