Hey, me and sarah had a fab last day in sydney- we decided what to do as we went along, as we'd seen all the main attractions already. It was a nice chilled day but we did loads as usual. First we went to the darling harbour area, really nice there- there were loads of warships at port, loads of nice restaurants, and theres a massive museum, wildlife bit and the sydney aquarium.
We went to the aquarium- it was only 10.00 each, and we thought we'd be there for about an hour or so. We were there for over 3 hrs! It was the expanding aquarium lol, biggest and best aquarium i have ever been to. Alot of it was underwater in special containers in the harbour. The building was huge, and the three separate parts (all with the tunnels to see everything close up) were the shark and ray bit, the dugong and ray bit, and the other was a reef display, with more sharks! It was fantastic, took so many photos! My favourite was the dugongs- they were so gentle and curious! They came right up to the glass and swam alongside you as you walked along, and went over your head. Sometimes they followed you and then turned upside down to look at you. The aquarium had loads of conservation information there too, me and sarah hope all the efforts being made to save them are successful- theyre critically endangered and have so many threats.
We eventually got to the last part where there was a glass bottom floor and sides, and the sharks around you- one of the bigger ones came right up to my feet! Some people didnt like and bolted through!
We walked to the harbour bridge by a different route this time- went along the harbour from the darling area, saw loads of navy boats out with all the sailor guys on deck saluting- we learnt later that they were all out on display that day in rememberance. We went past some really nice local restaurants, and there were hundreds of motorbikes along the road too for some reason. Lots of the buildings looked like old mill buildings.
We got to the tip of the harbour area and it was so posh and beautiful- loads of massive yachts and cruisers belonging to private flats overlooking the harbour bridge. Beautiful restaurants here too- massive chandeliers and all the old beams in them too.
We walked around this area and went underneath the harbour bridge to see the opera house from the other angle- when we were looking at it a really old wooden sailing boat went past it, looked like a real old pirate boat. We eventually reached the ferry bit near the opera house to get a ferry over to Manly- a really nice suburb near sydney. Sarah was in front of me, and she put her ticket through and the barrier let her in, and I was literally two seconds behind and it spat my ticket out and wouldnt let me through!
So sarah had to get on the ferry, couldnt climb bk over the barriers and use her ticket again as it had already stamped it, and I couldnt get past/over the barriers, so we were separated lol. I had to wait for the next ferry, half an hour later, and luckily found her ok in the harbour at Manly! It was quite funny, on the way bk we made sure we were on time for the ferry rather than rushing and getting caught out lol.
As soon as we explored manly we thought it would be so nice to live here! Gorgeous area that extends out into the sea, with beaches, coves, a national park, good surfing and sailing, and a 15min ferry to sydney harbour! It seemed like the place to live, esp if you had a boat! They had fir trees planted along the beach walks, and volleyball nets on the beach for you to use. We walked round the town (really nice shopping here), and left at about 5pm after sitting at the beach for a bit.
When we got bk to sydney harbour we walked back to darling harbour and went on the monrail that goes around the city. We got to see paddys markets and the chinatown, and then we left the monorail on the other side of darling harbour after doing a loop around the city, and got some dinner and went round the shops at the riverside. We found a wierd little shop- called the english lollypop shop- it has everything that english people might miss if they lived here lol. Including the cholocates that you get at home which you dont find here, like galaxy chocolate, and tomato ketchup lol. They had stacks of shelves with massive jars of sweets- they gave us some free ones when we came in cus we were english LOL. Didnt buy anything.
We then walked bk across town to our hostel, Base, and packed for the next day for our OZ bus journey to Melbourne, a 3 day journey (the only time you stay with the same people on the same oz bus for so long) with an overnight stop at Thredbo and at Lakes entrance. We didnt get much sleep this night- there was one guy in our hostel room, and OMG, didnt he snore!! It was the loudest snoring I have ever heard, he should have woken himself up, impossible to sleep through! At one point all of us 5 girls were shouting at him, and he still didnt actually wake up!! It got to about half 4 am and I gave up as we getting up in an hour anyway so no point trying to sleep. So annoying!
