Dan and Lu's Travels
Went into Townsville this morning to the art gallery for an exhibition on WWII in Queensland. I've never seen anything about Oz's involvement in the war before, from their point of view, we always just seems to get the european angle so it was really interesting.
We then set out north again, and turned off the highway about 90km from Townsville randomly having seen a sign for Jourama Falls. Really glad we did too!
Had to walk about 2km before we got to lots of stones and rocks with water rushing round and over them. Took off shoes and made our way over them then walked up the steep path for about 2.5 km to the lookout point over Jourama Falls. Absolutely stunning waterfall that cascaded down the face at about 4 different levels.
The weather turned grey and miserable as we drove to a rest area just north of a tiny place called Tully. Tully holds the record for the wettest populated place in Oz. In 1950 it had the highest annual rainfall in the country - 7.9 metres! There's a giant gumboot at the entrance to town which is 7.9m tall.
We drove through; it looked like the kind place a saloon-door-swinging-moment would occur if you dared enter 'the local'......... Or maybe it was just the weather.
As we drove to the rest area the rainforest on either side of the road was absolutley devastated. Trees and branches everywhere. Cyclone Larry hit this area about 7 weeks ago, apparantly with wind speeds of about 350km/hour. Parking up in the wind and rain alongside the sinister looking shapes of the trees was quite scary!
