Dan and Claire go worldwide
From Puno in Peru we crossed the border into Bolivia on our way to La Paz, driven by Bolivias answer to Michael Schumacher in an old style chicken bus! What should have been a lovely scenic journey around lakes and mountains turned into a journey where we feared for our lives...literally, after being merely 2 seconds from flying off the side of a cliff! Road works had caused another bus to stop around a blind bend on the edge of a cliff, and hurtling around the corner we went, and instead of thinking oh i`ll just bump the bus in front, no....he headed off the edge of the cliff, no joke...we were left hanging with seconds to spare!! i have honestly never been so scared!.
After that adventure, we finally made it to La Paz, the highest city in the world at over 4,000 plus m above sea level. And if you couldnt already breathe because of the altitude, you certainly couldnt breathe for the smog, pollution and fumes that filled the city! Think of central London at rush hour, times it by 10, and that is La Paz 24 hours a day, there is no let up! it is the most crazy place we have ever been, and being a developing country it was quite poor. Our couple of days were only made better by a lovely Canadian couple who we stayed in an apartment with and enjoyed some lovely meals with.
So as you can imagine, after a couple of days in La Paz, we were ready to head out to our original reason for heading to Bolivia, The salt lakes of Uyuni. After 3 days of Claire crying in fear of another (and thankfully last!) Bolivian bus, we headed on the dreaded overnight bus to our destination, and look at what we found......
So tip of the day......never get a bus in Bolivia xxxx
