We arrived in Sydney on the 27th December and checked into our huge hostel. A few extra guests of cockroaches made us feel right at home and instantly at ease!! We went and saw the harbour front, including the Bridge and the Opera House, which was really good. We also went to Taronga Zoo where you can take a photo of a Giraffe and the opera house in the background!! Not a bad view!! We also visited the infamous Bondi beach, which had to be closed on a couple of occasions as there were some unwanted visitor in the sea that were being a bit of a nuisance!! 6ft hammer heads, fighting over a squid!! CRAZY!
On New Years eve we started queuing for the botanical gardens which has the best view of the Bridge, the Opera House and of course the fireworks! We got into the queue at 9am and didn't get in until 1pm. At one point the queue was 5km long!! We met a Cornish couple that had just got married in Oz - Dan and Lucy. The fireworks were amazing even if they did only last for about 10 minutes. Totally worth the queue to see them though and the wait in 40 degree heat! Then from Sydney we hired a 'Wicked' camper van for 2 weeks to drive to Melbourne. Our friends from the New Years Eve queue (other Cornish Dan & Lucy) also hired one and we spent the first couple nights camping out together in Jervis bay watching the dolphins whilst having pasta and a beer! It was amazing! Each Wicked camper van is spray painted differently, Ours had Dracula on the sides with "Guess where I'm pierced..." on the back, lovely!! The trip to Melbourne was great and being able to stop off where ever you wanted was so much better than getting a bus straight to Melbourne. We saw loads on the way including Kangaroos, Koala's, beaches, cheese factories, etc. Also drove the Great Ocean Road and stayed along there for a few days which was amazing as your driving on a road with the ocean one side and a cliff the other bending around all the hills. We drove to Ballaret and saw Dan's cousin Laura and then headed to Melbourne and dropped the van off. Sad times indeed saying goodbye to 'The Count'!.
Once in Melbourne we met up with April one of Becky's best friends and she let us stay at her place for a week, which was fantastic! Being able to chill, cook and watch TV was brilliant! We enjoyed many BBQ's with April and some lovely pink bubbles! Needless to say there was lots of laughing, reminiscing and fun had during this time! We went for the day to the Australian Open and saw the Williams sisters play - pretty big ladies!! Even had a streaker run on the court when they were playing and when he realised no one was chasing him he did a nice little jig to the Williams sisters and then just ran up the players tunnel. After realising we have no money left we are currently looking for some temporary work to fund the last part of our trip. Not as easy as you would think!!! BUM!!
