Day 16 & 17 - Okavango Delta
Week 3 and the last week with this group since most people will leave us in Victoria Falls. Another early start since we had to load our big luggage in the truck at 6 AM, and take a small rucksack to the airport where two planes awaited us …. This time a 7 seater and an 11 seater.
The landing strip was just a clearing in a field (see Photo) and the arrival hall was just a shed . 2 4 X 4 vehicles (unfortunately Land Cruisers not LRs) with guides awaited us. Split the group up - One for the "English" and Klaus became a renegade and joined us ( now we are 9)……The rest joined the German translator in the other truck.
When we arrived at camp Fallen Baobab - we were greeted by the staff with singing and dancing, which was corny but quite cool.
Permanent tents for the next 2 nights. This is luxury camping with tents that include toilet and shower and come with a view open to the wild life …… No mobile connection - no internet - just back nature …… Maybe the leopard will pass our tent tonight.
Highlight of the first day was being taken on Mokoros, with are very light boat propelled by native "polers" ….. We crossed a lake and approached the Hippos - They were loads of them and we were scarily close and in flimsy boats about 3 inches above the waterline but the polers knew their business and kept us out of trouble.
We literally just came back into shore when the sky opened up and it poured down with rain with tropical strength - so everyone ran for the Jeeps. However the 4X4 was open in both sides so it didn't took long before we were all soaking wet. Were supposed to have had sunset drinks on the way back - but ended up going straight back to camp - since the rain was just too heavy. Some of us did not bring spare clothes and arrived at dinner in an assortment of garb …. I was in my swimming shorts.
