Hello everyone once again!
Hope your all ok. We once again set off on a weekend break in Europe this time to Belgium to see Brussels and Brugge. We couldnt decide wether to do Brussels or Bruges so we ended up doing both!
We got the earliest possible flight on the friday morning and left at around 4:00am in order to make the most of the day. As you can imagine we were absoloutely knackered when we arrived in Brussels airport. But we decided to get the train to the hotel, drop the bags off and have a walk round the city. We got to our hotel (The Metropol) at about 10am and obviously our room wasnt ready for us to check in. So we left the bags in the concierge armed ourselves with a map and went to seek out the sights.
We made our way early to the grand place, which was beautiful, the famous hotel is called the hotel de ville in the grand place which is the centre point within the square itself. Unfortunately they did have some building work going on in a number of areas in the city so some of the sights were not as breathtaking as they may well have been. We made our way from the Grand Place to go and see some of the other sights around the city including the sacre couer, cathedrals and the town hall.
After seeing a large majority of the sights we wearily headed back to the hotel for some shut eye. The room was gorgeous and we had a massive bathroom but all we were interested in was going to sleep and the sooner the better!
We woke up about 6pm and decided to go and get some dinner. There was a large steak house right by our hotel so we went there for our dinner. Shell had grilled chicken and I decided to have a nice fillet of salmon. The dinner was really nice and after a few glasses of wine we headed into some of the bars to try out the famous belgium beers.
Stupidly I ordered a 50cl drink as the 25cl was like a wine glass of beer. When it arrived it was more like two pints! It was however quite nice. There was another size on the menu called la lunette and I have no idea how big this would be, but judging by the size of the 50cl it would be huge!
The next day we headed to Bruges for the day. We got up early and had a really nice breakfast in the hotel. Shell was happy as there was plenty of beans and hash browns! After breakfast we headed to the train station and got the train to Bruges, unfortunately the clerks there dont understand english that well so you find yourself asking everyone on the platform what train they are expecting, still we got on the right one. We got to Bruges early that morning and had a gorgeous day for it. The sun was out and it was quite warm even tho it was february. Bruges is gorgeous and well worht the visit. The cobbled streets divide up some gorgeous buildings and canals snake throughout the city. It is like they say the Venice of the north.
We got a map as soon as we got to Bruges and walked into the city. We visited some of the quiant little shops and went up the belfry for a great view of the city. We walked round for a while longer then stopped for a spot of lunch, we had a nice pannini and a belgian waffle, which was lovely kind of like a shaped doughnut! We then headed to the canal and got a boat ride around the city. It didnt cost much and the guide spoke in around five languages so it was a great way to see the city.
We headed home after a full days sight seeing and got ready to go out that evening. We spotted a mexican which was nearby to our hotel and had a really nice and inexpensive meal. There was also a number of nice bars nearby which we ended up in for a few rose's!
The next day we set aside for buying chocolates!! So we headed back into brussels where there are loads of shops to buy the chocolates. We found the cheapest place to buy was quite near to our hotel and there was no queue. After filling a couple of boxes full of chocolate we made our way back to the grand place for some more photos before we found our way to the manekin pis, which is basically a tiny statue a boy taking a leak made by michaelangelo - though someone had covered him up in a raincoat when we got there!!!
We caught our flight that evening and had a really nice time. Speak to you all soon xxx danny and shell xxx
