Not a lot to say today. We started early after a late session at the Fish Bar in Firenze to catch a 9am train to Milan. From there we had about ten mins to catch the second train to take us over the Gotthard and down to Zürich. The Freccia Rossa train was one of Italy's best, very speedy very comfy and we were cruising at 300km/h so almost 200mph. Why can't we have these in England?
The second train ride was great. Superb views of Lake Como and the Alps before climbing over the pass and down to Zürich. When we arrive we are surprised to find it doesn't seem any cooler than Firenze. Very humid and so it feels very close.
We check into the hotel which is literally 2 mins walk from the Hauptbahnhof over the bridge and with lovely views of the river and smack bang in the middle of the expensive part of town. Our room is at the back and looks out straight to the UBS Polybahn funicular. Bars next door are charging £12-21 for 500ml of beer so less than a pint. Night off then? We stop at the Starbucks to fill up and are charged about £6 for a small sandwich and £4 for a latté. Starbucks always was a rip-off but the coffee is okay. Strangely- the supermarket on the bridge has some deals- a big pile of grapes for £1.20 and tins of beer for around the same price.
We've had a wander down to the Lake but theres no real sights to see here although it's a nice enough place. We have one negative- no aircon in the hotel and it's still over 26'c at 10pm and apparently feels like over 30'c. We have one weedy fan and three travel weary chaps who need some kip. Might have to sleep on the Sleazyjet plane then?
